What is Reiki?
Reiki has its roots in ancient Japanese healing techniques from Shingon and Tendai Buddhist practices. The modern version of Reiki was popularized by Mikao Usui in the early 1900s and has since spread worldwide. The practice involves channeling universal ki (also known as chi or qi) into the client's energy field to promote overall health and wellbeing. In-person sessions involve hovering the hands over the body or light touching, but sessions can also be conducted at a distance using specific techniques (1, 2)
There is evidence to suggest that Reiki can improve mental health, reduce pain, and complement medical care by promoting relaxation. Although more research is needed, Reiki often performs better than a placebo in studies, and there are Reiki practitioners in hospitals and clinics around the world (3). Reiki can also be a spiritual experience, offering insight, fostering growth, and removing blocks on the client's spiritual path.
What Can Reiki do for Me?
Reiki has a wide range of mental and physical benefits. Here are just a few examples of ways that Reiki can improve your health and wellbeing.

Stress Relief
Reiki promotes deep relaxation, releases tension in the body, and relieves stress

Reduce Pain
Reiki promotes muscle relaxation and eases emotional tension, providing a relief from chronic pain

Improved Sleep Quality
Deep relaxation leads to higher quality sleep, benefitting every aspect of health

Block Release
Unprocessed emotions, thoughts, and memories can cause energy "blocks", keeping people trapped in limiting patterns and beliefs

Cord Release
Reiki can safely remove energetic ties, or "cords", that keep you attached to old people and situations

Complement Other Treatments
Reiki can improve the effectiveness of other medical procedures, mental health therapies, or spiritual practices

How does distance Reiki work?
Everything in the universe is connected by a quantum field of energy. Think of it like the "fabric" of the universe, a quilt made up of smaller quantum fields all fluctuating and interacting with each other. These constant fluctuations are what create matter and energy as we know it, as well as the forces which move matter and energy such as gravity and electromagnetic fields (4).
In the second level of Reiki training, we learn how to send Reiki through these quantum fields to a distant subject. Everyone's energy is connected on a quantum level, so Reiki can be sent across space and be just as effective as in-person sessions (5).
